Tātai Kōrero - Te Tua Whakatere

Te Tua Whakatere explores the migration of the Mataatua waka to Aotearoa, and the expeditions of those onboard. The travelling did not stop on arrival to these shores but continued with the exploration of the North Island.

Our people were known by many names throughout the land as they moved and mingled with other tribes. They were not stationed at one pā but had many kāinga in which they lived. Our tūpuna were explorers, travellers, renowned strategists and warriors which lead to many alliances.

Stories of exploration, blood and betrayal.

A prophetic vision leads to the creation of a large canoe in which whole families embark on the adventure to unknown lands. It’s not smooth sailing as the waka encounters a monstrous sea creature and storm on their journey. With expertly trained tohunga on board, the waka is saved and makes it way to their destination. Others weren’t so lucky.

On arriving to Aotearoa, the waka explores the coasts as they travel from the north to the east. The landmarks in the vision mark the initial place of settlement.

Relationships are built and strengthened through generations until a deathly threat is made between brothers which leads to the degradation of family ties.
